What a fractional CTO costs in India

In India, the honest answer is that the market barely publishes prices. Most “CTO as a service” offers come from development companies, and the CTO time is how they sell developer hours. Few publish their own rupee rate for the CTO role itself. If you are in India, here is how an independent fractional CTO works for Indian businesses.

What you can compare against is a full-time hire. Payscale puts the average base salary of a CTO in India at about ₹41 lakh a year (updated June 2026), with a range from about ₹9 lakh to ₹1 crore. Startups pay more: a report by xto10x Technologies, reported by Outlook Business in March 2025, put the median startup CTO salary at ₹1.77 crore a year. Both figures are before equity, benefits and the cost of hiring.

What a fractional CTO costs in the UK

The UK market publishes more. Fractional Quest’s cost guide (updated September 2026, citing Red Eagle Tech) gives day rates of £1,000–£1,600 and monthly retainers of £3,000–£7,000. The same guide puts the year-one cost of a permanent CTO at £192,500–£255,000 once salary, employer costs and recruitment are added, from a base salary of £140,000–£180,000.

What you are actually paying for

A fractional CTO’s hours are not development hours. You are paying for decisions: what to build, what to automate, what to leave alone, and who is accountable for each one. That usually means reviewing what you already run, choosing between suppliers or tools, writing the brief your developers or agency build from, and checking that what gets delivered works for your business.

That is why comparing day rates misleads. One good decision, such as not buying a tool or not rebuilding a system, can be worth more than the whole engagement. Rebuilding a UK council platform serverless cut its infrastructure costs by 70%; you can see what changed for six businesses.

How Your Tech Chief prices

You pay for the hours your scope needs, at ₹5,000 an hour in India or £100 an hour in the UK. After a free 30-minute review, you get a written fix-first list and a fixed quote for the first fix, with a cap, so you know the maximum before you commit. After that, you pay for the hours you use. There is no retainer and no minimum term, and any ongoing month has a cap agreed in advance.

  1. Free 30-minute review. We talk through what you are running and what is stuck.
  2. A written fix-first list within a few hours. The one thing to fix first, two after it, and what to leave alone.
  3. A fixed, capped quote for the first fix. Typically 10–20 hours: from ₹50,000 in India or £1,000 in the UK.
  4. Then only as needed. Hours as used, with a monthly cap you agree. You decide whether I stay on as your ongoing CTO.

If the bill is still a question after you have read this, bring it to the call. Book a free 30-minute review, and the quote comes with the fix-first list.

A worked example

Say a founder’s enquiries are slipping between WhatsApp, a CRM and a sales team, and the first fix is to map the journey, set owners and rules for each stage, and brief the automation. That is scoped at 15 hours.

IndiaUK
First fix, 15 hours (capped)₹75,000£1,500
A later month, 10 hours₹50,000£1,000
A busier month, 20 hours₹1,00,000£2,000

Even the busier month is well under a month of a full-time CTO’s average salary in India, and under the bottom of the UK retainer range. The same lead-journey work, done for a premium real-estate business in India, took monthly conversions from 0.6 to 1.55.

When a full-time CTO is the cheaper choice

A fractional CTO stops being good value when your product is the business and technology decisions arrive every day: a software company with a growing engineering team, a platform raising its next round, or a business that needs someone in the office leading developers full time. At that point, paying by the hour for someone who isn’t there all week costs more than it saves. Hire the CTO. A fractional CTO can still help you write the role and interview for it.

What to ask any fractional CTO about price

  • Is the price for the CTO’s time, or does it include development you didn’t ask for?
  • What will I have at the end of the first piece of work, in writing?
  • Is there a cap, and what happens if the work runs over it?
  • Is there a minimum term or a notice period?
  • Who owns the documents, accounts and code that come out of the work?

Questions about fractional CTO cost

How much does a fractional CTO cost in India?

Few Indian providers publish a rupee rate for the CTO role itself. Your Tech Chief charges ₹5,000 an hour, with a fixed, capped quote for the first piece of work, typically from ₹50,000. For comparison, Payscale puts the average full-time CTO salary in India at about ₹41 lakh a year.

How much does a fractional CTO cost in the UK?

Published UK guides put fractional CTO day rates at £1,000 to £1,600 and monthly retainers at £3,000 to £7,000. Your Tech Chief charges £100 an hour, with a fixed, capped quote for the first piece of work, typically from £1,000, and no retainer.

Is a fractional CTO cheaper than a full-time CTO?

Usually, yes, while technology decisions come in bursts rather than every day. A full-time CTO costs about ₹41 lakh a year on average in India and £192,500 or more in year one in the UK. Once your product is the business and decisions are daily, a full-time hire becomes the better value.

Why does Your Tech Chief charge by the hour instead of a monthly retainer?

Because the work comes in scoped pieces, not a fixed number of days. You get a fixed, capped quote for the first fix after a free 30-minute review, then pay only for the hours you use, with a monthly cap agreed in advance and no minimum term.

What does the first piece of work cost?

It depends on the scope, but most first fixes take 10 to 20 hours: from ₹50,000 in India or £1,000 in the UK. You get the quote, with a cap, after the free 30-minute review and before you commit to anything.
